Preventative Dental Care
At Bluestem Health, preventative dentistry includes many things:
- Sealants
- Fluoride applications
- Full cleanings
- X-rays
- Polishing and exams
Sealants
Sealants are typically placed on molars and sometimes premolars, to prevent cavities. The target population are children, but these can also be placed on adult teeth to minimize their chance of getting a cavity on the treated tooth.
Fluoride Applications
Fluoride applications are also implemented as a prevention of decay. Any patient who is considered high risk should be treated with a topical fluoride application. Fluoride will deposit in areas where even a small cavity may be starting, to strengthen a weaker area. Fluoride can also aid in sensitivity relief. Patients are typically encouraged to return on a six-month basis for routine cleanings.
Full Cleaning
At these appointments, a full cleaning is done to remove any plaque and bacteria a patient might have. This gives the hygienist a chance to point out any areas that a patient may be missing when brushing or flossing.
X-Rays
At least once a year x-rays are taken to help diagnose decay.
Polishing and Exams
The dentist usually does an exam at each cleaning appointment, which also allows them to look for any pathologies or other issues a patient may be experiencing.
