Managing Influenza and Other Winter Illnesses
Michael Israel, MD, at Bluestem Health, shares the importance and benefits of timely treatment of winter illnesses for families.

While it may feel like winter is almost over, winter illnesses like the flu can linger well into spring. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, influenza is still at a high level in Nebraska. Michael Israel, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Bluestem Health in Lincoln, Nebraska, understands the importance of ensuring that Bluestem Health’s patients of all ages are being seen right away if they are experiencing flu-like symptoms.
Signs of Flu in Children
If your child comes down with the flu, you’ll probably notice the symptoms hit fast. One moment, they’re fine, and the next, they’re running a high fever (often over 100.4°F), complaining of body aches, and looking completely wiped out. The flu can make kids feel miserable, and as a parent, it’s tough to see them that way. Watch for symptoms like:
- Fever
- Chills
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Runny nose
Dr. Israel says that it’s easy to mistake these symptoms for a cold. “The flu tends to come on more suddenly and with more intense tiredness. Some kids, especially younger ones, may also have nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.” While most kids recover with rest and fluids, keep a close eye on severe symptoms, such as:
- Difficulty breathing
- Chest pain
- Persistent vomiting
- Fever that won’t come down
“Seek medical care right away,” says Dr. Israel. “The best defense against the flu is the annual flu shot, good handwashing habits, and keeping sick kids home to prevent spread.”
RSV Can Lead to Breathing Problems in Kids
RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is a common virus that can hit young children hard, especially infants. It often starts like a regular cold—runny nose, cough, and fever—but can lead to severe breathing problems in some kids. Watch for signs like fast breathing, wheezing, or flaring nostrils. Babies with RSV might struggle to eat or seem extra tired.
“While most kids recover at home with rest and fluids, RSV can lead to pneumonia or bronchiolitis, sometimes requiring hospital care,” Dr. Israel says. “If your child is having trouble breathing, don’t wait—get help right away.”
Preparing Family Medicine Clinics for Seasonal Illnesses
According to Dr. Israel, the family medicine providers at Bluestem Health are staying ahead of this late winter wave of flu-like illnesses with care, preparedness, and a commitment to keeping families healthy. They’re encouraging flu shots, reminding everyone about simple but effective habits like handwashing, and making sure patients have easy access to care—whether through same-day visits or virtual appointments. They’re also closely monitoring symptoms to quickly determine if it’s the flu, COVID-19, or something else, so treatment starts immediately.
“By staying ahead with updated guidelines, patient education, and accessible care, we want to help families and our community stay healthy through this season,” Dr. Israel said.
