You can tell Humaira Qasimyar, MD, truly loves being a pediatrician when she talks about caring for children. When she was in medical school it became very apparent to her that the specialty she wanted to work in was pediatrics. "As I started to do rotations in the different specialties, I realized that I was at my happiest in my pediatrics rotation where I was able to work with children on a daily basis," Dr. Qasimyar reflected. "In pediatrics, you get a built-in support team of parents and providers who have the child’s best interest at heart. It feels good to help parents work through questions and concerns."
Dr. Qasimyar grew up in Omaha, NE, attended medical school at the University of Nebraska – Omaha, and completed her residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. After receiving her Medical Degree in 2016, Dr. Qasimyar stayed an additional year to be Chief Resident at Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, and to treat patients as a practicing pediatrician. She spent another year working as a pediatrician in California before joining Bluestem Health. She is Board Certified in Pediatrics through the American Academy of Pediatrics.
No two days are the same in her practice, according to Dr. Qasimyar, but she likes the variety of patients because it keeps her brain charged. From routine checkups and newborn visits to allergies and ADHD or behavioral issues at home or school, it’s a full scope of medical and psychosocial health issues. When she’s finished her day of work, she always feels it was a privilege that someone trusted her with their child. “Being a pediatrician is a rewarding experience because you’re given the opportunity to have an impact from the time a child is first born through their adolescent years,” Dr. Qasimyar goes on to say. “To follow them as they grow up, to be a trusted resource, and to advocate for those that don’t have a voice or haven’t learned to use their voice yet, is a responsibility that I’m passionate about.”
As a pediatrician, Dr. Qasimyar is often brought in to help care with complex cases. Sometimes these are medically complex patients who have had multiple surgical procedures and require several medications. Other times these are children with atypical developmental behaviors or children requiring mental health resources. Any of these challenges can profoundly impact a child’s growth and quality of life and need to be treated with careful consideration.
Some of the greatest challenges pediatricians are often faced with stem from trying to diagnose and treat a child that is too young to verbally express his or her problems. In addition, Dr. Qasimyar realizes there is so much that impacts a child’s health, from prenatal to adulthood. She says it’s heartbreaking to see the psychological and physical impacts on children of all ages from community tragedies and certain government policies that are given round-the-clock news coverage. Whether on TV, on their electronic devices, in print media, or through personal experiences, children are exposed to these things continually. “It’s toxic stress that builds up in kids,” Dr. Qasimyar says. “It’s an enormous responsibility for pediatricians to recognize that we have a duty to our patients to investigate what we can do on both local and national levels to promote policies that protect kids. We have to be advocates for children.”
At Bluestem Health, Dr. Qasimyar loves the opportunity to serve vulnerable and underserved populations. That was one of the reasons she chose to move back to Nebraska and join Bluestem Health’s team of professionals. She was impressed by their dedication to help the underserved, to provide the best care possible to all people, and to be a trusted resource for parents, children, and teens in the community.
When she is not taking care of patients, Dr. Qasimyar loves exploring the outdoors, especially the local and state parks. She loves reading books, especially fantasy fiction and mysteries, and watching movies. She also enjoys sports, as well as traveling to experience new places.
“No matter how challenging things can get, at the end of the day I remember the gratitude that is shown to me every day, and I want to be able to feel as if I have earned it,” Dr. Qasimyar says. “The innocence and trust kids have when they come into this world is something I want to work to protect; they deserve the best care we can give them. However long I am in their lives as their physician, I hope to help guide my patients on a path for a happy, healthy, and safe life.”
